How to Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Every so often, I find myself in a terrible mood. After a few cat claws thrown his way, my husband will make a comment about my negative attitude. During those times is when I find it hardest to change my mindset into a positive one. Can you relate?

It’s easy to be positive when things are going great, but when everything around us is crumbling down life-sized boulders after us, how could we possibly be positive? Although it's the hardest time to be happy-go-lucky, this is the most crucial time to change your outlook. When those moments hit you, here are a few things you can do.

First, acknowledge your emotions and accept the feelings you’re having. Sometimes I’m grumpy because there’s a grocery list of things bothering me. Other times, I can’t quite pin point what I’m upset about. Either way, I identify what the emotion is.

After accepting your feelings, talk to someone about why you’re upset. If you would rather not talk to someone, grab a piece of paper or your phone notes and write or type away your feelings. Let it out and hold nothing back about what it is that’s keeping you from feeling your best. It’s also crucial to note when you turn to someone to confide in them that they be someone who will hear you. They will hear your feelings, acknowledge and validate them. If this person turns this conversation into one about themselves, they are the wrong person to turn to.

Once you’ve said your piece, examine the things in your life you’re grateful for. The conversation I typically have in my head goes something like this, “I’m mad/sad/emotional and I’m not sure why. *take a breath and accept those feelings* Okay, I’m upset because …” I talk it out, and, “I feel a lot better, I’m grateful I was able to pin point what upset me and now I want to stop being grumpy and have a better day. I’m grateful the sun is shining, I’m grateful I have a home, I’m able to have children, and I have running water.”

After every challenging moment in my life, a new door opened. When you receive bad news or have you're having a difficult time, think about how it's changing you. Is it changing you to become more accepting of others? Is it helping you appreciate something you once took for granted? What positive thing is coming from this situation?

This strategy is not for everyone but truly give it a try. Life is not worth being angry, sad or upset about. Life is meant to be lived happily and if we have the control to make everyday a day worth living, why not make it a positive one.
